About
Planning for the unplanned.
Eight years ago, we remodeled our basement, including updating the bathroom. One year ago, the basement toilet clogged. During the repairs, our plumber told us that the backwater flap is broken and if we don't fix it the clogging will return. But before we could fix it, we have to find it. He thought it was under the carpet in the room next to the bathroom. I was pretty sure the contractor mentioned years ago that it was accessible behind the wall. Neither of us could prove it. Nobody wrote it down.
So now we're guessing about something that's going to cost real money to get wrong. Rip up the carpet or tear open the wall.
In hindsight, the problem is it was not installed correctly eight years ago – but that's how owning a home goes sometimes. Not the big disasters you remember. The quiet accumulation of decisions, repairs, and contractor conversations that happen over years of homeownership and then just disappear. Into drawers, old emails, faded receipts, texts that don't survive a phone upgrade.
That's the gap FileFort was built to close.
